Kanpur Ranking to Be Held as Scheduled Despite TTFI Suspension: Sources

Sports Ministry Suspends TTFI Recognition Over Governance Issues

New Delhi: In a major development for Indian table tennis, the Sports Ministry has suspended the government’s recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) over governance-related concerns. The decision comes amid questions over the federation’s functioning, athlete welfare and transparency in the selection process.

The ministry’s action follows a show-cause notice issued to TTFI. The federation has faced scrutiny over its governance structure and the process followed for selecting players for major international events.

IOA asked to work with ITTF

Following the suspension, the ministry has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to approach the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to work out a framework for administering table tennis in India.

An ad-hoc arrangement is also being considered as an interim mechanism while the federation works towards restoring a compliant governance structure.

Manika Batra selection controversy also in focus

The development comes against the backdrop of controversy surrounding the selection of star paddler Manika Batra for the 2026 Asian Games. The selection process had raised questions over transparency and the functioning of the selection committee.

The latest action by the ministry puts the governance of Indian table tennis under renewed scrutiny at a crucial time for the sport.

Kanpur Ranking to continue as scheduled

Despite the suspension of TTFI’s recognition, the Kanpur Ranking tournament is expected to be held as per the scheduled programme, sources said.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Kanpur, and the latest development regarding TTFI recognition is not expected to affect the event’s immediate conduct, according to sources.

The continuation of the tournament will come as a relief to players and organisers, particularly with athletes preparing for upcoming domestic and international competitions.

What happens next?

The immediate focus will be on establishing an interim administrative mechanism and ensuring that athletes, competitions and India’s international commitments are not disrupted.

The ministry’s decision is likely to trigger further discussions between the IOA, ITTF and other stakeholders over the future administration of table tennis in India.
